Make your own fluoride-free toothpaste!

Before we get to the recipe, did you know….?

Fluoride is a toxic substance added to toothpaste and in most towns in the US is added to our water supply!

Have you ever noticed the warning on most toothpaste containers?

“WARNING: Keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age. If you accidentally swallow more than used for brushing, seek professional help or contact a poison control center immediately.”

The FDA warning is necessary because relatively small doses of fluoride can induce symptoms of acute fluoride toxicity (i.e., poisoning). Early symptoms of fluoride poisoning include gastrointestinal pain, nausea, vomiting, and headaches. The minimum dose that can produce these symptoms is estimated to be 0.1 to 0.3 mg/kg of fluoride (i.e., 0.1 to 0.3 milligrams of fluoride for every kilogram of bodyweight). A child weighing 10 kilograms, therefore, can suffer symptoms of acute toxicity by ingesting just 1 to 3 milligrams of fluoride in a single sitting.

Did you know that 97% of Western Europe has rejected the addition of fluoride to their water supply? And there are towns in the US that have banned fluoride. Here is an interesting list to see if your town is mentioned:

Anyway, back to how to make your own fluoride-free toothpaste!

  • 2 T. coconut oil in a glass bowl or jar (warmed for better mixing)
  • baking soda (add for preferred consistency)
  • a few shakes of organic turmeric (as an anti-inflammatory)
  • 1 -2 drops of doTerra Peppermint oil

Mix ingredients. Then brush, and rinse! (the turmeric makes for a yellow mouth, but no worries, it rinses right off)

Happy brushing!
